Summer is the time of year when everyone wants to celebrate. And why not? The weather is great. The sun is out, so you’re not all crammed in some airless room. School is out. For us adults, the office is usually a little under-inhabited as everyone takes their vacations. Everything’s a little less buttoned up and a little more casual.
This is the time of year when people are celebrating graduations and weddings. And I always feel like there are more baby showers during the summer months, too, don’t you? ‘Tis the season to party, and to show some skin while doing so. Summer is the time when you can really glam up and go wild with sexy shoes. I love a strappy heel with an open toe this time of year. It’s the right time and the right climate to show off, no?
With all these special occasions, it’s important to have some solid formal footwear in your closet. No one wants to steal a bride’s thunder or anything like that, but we do have to turn out looking right for a party. It would be disrespectful not to.
I love a strappy sandal for these occasions. I love this Juno sandal by Betsey Johnson. It’s a great neutral color. It has the right height to help accentuate the legs. It’s got the sparkle factor, thanks to metallic leather and those great crystals. Betsey Johnson is well-known for creating rockstar style fashion. This is a sedate look for her, and one that you can get a lot of mileage out of this wedding season.
Another great pick is the Nina Bresse D’Orsay pump. With a fabric upper and a feminine bow, this shoe is unimpeachable, even when it comes to the most conservative church wedding. This is also a great choice for daytime parties. Like if you’re going to high tea, or to a garden party, this is a great choice. Have you ever been to high tea, by the way? It’s very formal, but worth doing once, in my opinion. The Langham in Pasadena has a great traditional afternoon tea.
Finally, a great way to really spice up the dance floor is with these Riley sandals in metallic gold from J Crew. Made in Italy, these show-stoppers have a three inch heel. This shoe looks great with a fiery red frock. I also like to pair my metallics with a nice rich navy blue. That’s a great way to create visual interest in an otherwise slightly-conservative look.
For my older or younger ladies who maybe aren’t so comfortable with a higher heel, I love this Kimora sandal from Jewel by Badgeley Mischka. It’s a great-looking shoe that shows off the foot while still looking suitably formal. If that doesn’t look like
something you can dance the night away in, consider this sparkly shoe by Nina Zenida. It’s available in silver, gold and my favorite, black. This is an elegant shoe that’s also comfortable and easy to move in. If we can get my aged auntie out to my wedding next summer, I know I’ll see her in something like this.
Now, what about slightly more casual occasions? When it comes to birthdays at the beach, or fireworks at the park, I love a good throwback sneaker. You know I have no shame about my Keds, no matter how corny some of you think they look. I love this garden party motif slip-on. I have this one in my collection, and I wore it to my niece’s sixth birthday party at the park last Saturday. It’s festive, fun, and the color scheme really works with my skin tone.
These Sunwashed Canvas sneakers by LL Bean are another favorite with me. Did you know the cord goes around the back that way so you can tighten the shoe? It’s true! It helps the sneaker stay snug and secure on your foot.
And what about those in-between events? Like graduations, museum galas and garden parties? It’s semi-formal, not necessarily the type of event you show up to in your strappiest, sexiest sandal. For a graduation I like something dressy but not too over the top.
This Lena block heel sandal by Michael Kors looks great with a maxi dress, or something that hits at about the knee. It’s a great sandal that can go just about anywhere. It gives you some height and it shows off the toes and the ankles. I like pairing this kind of neutral beige color with a nice pink or peach dress. This
Fergalicious Fiance Espadrille is flirty and fun. It’s great for the young people partying after their own ceremony, or after a friend’s. I love that braided detailing on the heel! It’s so chic and unexpected. For something a little more traditional and upscale, I love this Maive sandal by Imagine Vince Camuto. In classic black, you can take it anywhere.
What are you ladies wearing this summer as you party up a storm? You know I want to hear about your events and how they go. Do you approve of my picks? Do you have some of your own that I should know about? You know the drill! Let me hear all about it in the comments below!
